UCI visualization experts Steve Jenks and Sung-Jin Kim were featured in Friday's Entrepreneur's Forum, sponsored by OCTANe@UCI and the Office of Technology Alliances. The program took the form of an interview, with OCTANe's Luis Vasquez posing the questions. The focus of the lunchtime program was Hiperwall, Inc., the spinoff company led by Jeff Greenberg. Greenberg, president of Tech Coast Works, specializes in commercializing UCI research. Jenks said as he and Kim demonstrated the HIPerWall display wall in the Calit2 Center of Gravity, visitors often expressed interest in purchasing the technology. After the wall was featured several times on national and international news programs, including CNN's "American Morning" and the Univision Spanish-language network, the researchers patented their work and licensed it to Samsung, Inc. to create a commercial version of the technology. Customers have two options: they can purchase Samsung monitors containing the visualization software from Samsung or they can purchase the software package alone from Hiperwall, Inc. Samsung completed a pilot product run last week, according to Kim, and both companies have begun taking orders. Jenks envisions the product evolving into giant organic-electro-luminescent displays that will hang in homes, replacing televisions, computers, artwork and more. "The product will be different, but the software that runs it will have the same parallel computing capabilities," he said. |
